I am a native of Mullingar and have been an all-round sports fanatic since childhood.
Mullingar Athletic AFC
I am a founder member of Mullingar Athletic AFC and was offered the position of Club Secretary with Charlton Athletic AFC in 1980. Over the years, I have been involved as an officer in a range of voluntary sporting organisations locally, and in Saudi Arabia in the early 1980s. Professionally, I worked in a range of accounting, administration and management jobs for over 25 years.
The Millennium Handbook of Westmeath Gaelic Games
In 1999/2000 I took an eight-month work sabbatical to write my first book, The Millennium Handbook of Westmeath Gaelic Games. I never settled back into my (well-paid but unhappy) ‘ordinary’ job thereafter and I gradually became involved in the (badly-paid but happy) world of sports writing!
Westmeath Examiner & Freelance sports journalist
While most closely associated with the Westmeath Examiner, I am freelance and available to work for any publication nationwide. I have written a popular television review column for the Westmeath Examiner at various times. In 2015, I interviewed 50 members of the Killucan/Raharney Golden Years Club for their 20th anniversary celebratory book. I have assisted some GAA clubs in producing written histories.
Midlands Radio 3 & media
I contribute regularly to a range of local and national publications and radio stations, especially Midlands Radio 3.I have undertaken television assignments for RTÉ, TV3 and Setanta Sports. I was a contestant on RTÉ’s Know Your Sport (1989) and Channel 4’s Countdown (2009).
